In discussing further the purpose of Acting For Real, by Thom McFadden, it’s important to remain mindful of the purpose of the skills taught in the book. Since virtually every human interaction is accomplished by (primarily) verbal communication, it’s very important for people to be in control of not only how they communicate but also how others learn (i.e. how others understand what they hear).
Since often times, in communications are intended to influence the behavior of others, it’s certainly valuable (if not downright critical) to understand the best ways to ‘get through’ to people.
Based on the three different types of communication, Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic, it’s very important to have some knowledge of how people we’re communicating with process information. If we don’t, then our words are almost meaningless. On the other hand, by understanding why type of person we’re talking to we can use those words that are most likely to effect the kind of reaction and behavior we desire.
Furthermore, by understanding what type of person we are, we’re better able to reveal our own true personality and meaning. Since establishing trust and rapport is so critical to human cooperation, being understood and believed is also critical. And that won’t happen if we’re not using the right words.
Acting For Real connects this understanding with it’s relationship to behavior and results. The value of that ability is that we can reverse engineer results with those roles that will get us where we want to go in life.
For example, let’s say you’re in sales. We all know that sales people need to be confident. If they can’t project confidence then it’s doubtful they’ll make many sales, right?
Understanding how to design and play an effective role as a salesperson is would be helpful to anybody in sales, right? Thom teaches how, no matter what type of learner you are, or the person you’re talking to is, it’s possible to design and play a role that will make your sales realtionship with them more effective.
The same methodology applies to other roles in life. You might be a parent and need to change your behavior in certain ways….e.g. be more loving, more forgiving, more forceful or more energetic. If you don’t understand the steps required to ‘be’ more of that way, whatever it is, you’ll never be able to exhibit those qualities that you’ve determined you need to show more of.
In Acting For Real, Thom teaches skills in designing and more effectively projecting characters in life, in whatever situation, that get the responses you desire. It’s true that whatever kind of vibes you put out…that’s the vibes that come back to you. With the insights and skills you’ll learn in Acting For Real, you’ll be able to put out the kind of vibes that are consistent with your desires and appropriate for every situation.
