5 More Ways To Have A Successful Summer Holiday

Heaven High and Happy Thursday!

Two days from now, most Americans will be celebrating the Fourth of July, our independence day. This is a time when we can forgo all of our inhibitions about being patriotic. We can don our star and stripes in tacky shorts and tank tops. However, what about the other days in July?

For example, did you know that today is World UFO Day? Yep, since 2001, July 2nd has been the day of all things unidentified that flies through the air. Do you believe in aliens?

As if you need more reasons to celebrate this summer, here are five more obscure holidays to celebrate in July.

#1) Sidewalk Egg Frying Day

fried-673254_1280

“What?” Yes, on July 4th, when most people are out blowing up fireworks, a handful of people will be out frying an egg on the sidewalk because of the heat. How do you like your eggs? Sunny-side up on asphalt?

#2) International Kissing Day

Pucker up on July 6th because this day is reserved in celebration of the pleasure of a sweet kiss. It’s as pure and simple as that. So go up to your loved ones and give him or her a nice big smooch!

#3) Teddy Bear Picnic Day

teddy-bear-792273_1280

July 10th is Teddy Bear Picnic Day. So spend some time with your daughter, niece, or cousins and have a picnic with them and their favorite stuffed bear. Every day is a good day for a picnic and July 10th is no exception.

#4) Slurpee Day

7/11 is known for it’s slurpees so it’s not surprise that 7/11 is Slurpee Day. Head over to your local 7/11 for a free Slurpee to cool yourself off on a hot July day. Of course, you might need to get there a little early to avoid the line.

#5) National Talk In An Elevator Day

elevator-358249_1280

The last Friday in July is reserved for National Talk In An Elevator Day. Why? Taking the elevator can be one of the most awkward times in your work day. Being cramped in a small space with a bunch of other people who may or may not need to tone down on the cologne or perfume – or maybe put on some deodorant.

Instead of standing around trying to avoid eye contact, why not try and strike up a conversation today. Talk about something that you heard on the news, the latest projects in your building, or the birthday party that everyone is throwing for Fred in Accounting.

It may seem silly to celebrate some of these obscure and, ahem, unique “holidays”. However, it is scientifically proven that people who are optimists and who smile more live longer and more fulfilling lives. So go out! Live a little! Fry an egg on a sidewalk! What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger – and might be a little gritty too…

Being Patriotic & Enjoying Your Success

Heaven High and Happy Tuesday!

For everyone in America, this Saturday is the Fourth of July! It is a fantastic reason to get together with your loved ones and show off your patriotism. That brings up an interesting thought though. How many of you show your patriotism all year long? Do you hang an American flag at your home? Do you support your troops (not condoning war but supporting the troops that choose to protect our country)? Do you actively participate in ways to help your community?

Patriotism is a simple concept that can – sometimes – be blown out of proportion: showing devotion to your country. While most of us can say that we are proud to be American, some people are more – obnoxious about their devotion. So how can you show your pride without being annoying? The FoundationofPatriotism.org published an article which stated the top four ways that they suggest practicing patriotism at work. I wanted to take these great examples and expand on them.

#1) Be a Conscientious Employee

bald-eagle-140793_1280

Americans aren’t handed the same hand as each other but we are all able to reap some opportunities if we work hard and stay determined. Being employed is one of those opportunities. Once you get a job, it doesn’t end there. Most jobs offer a ton of opportunities for advancement, raises in wage, discounts, etc.

One of the ways that we can ensure a good work environment for ourselves and for our coworkers is to be conscientious. Don’t be afraid to go the extra mile when the opportunity arises. That will get you noticed no matter what field you are in.

#2) Participate in Opportunities Made Available By Your Company

While at work, you may be given the chance to go to corporate events like team building retreats and chances for extended learning experiences. These are all great ways that you can make good use of the opportunities that you are given.

#3) Volunteer Your Time

If you feel lucky about what you have, struggle with feelings of doubt or sadness, or if you just feel like you need to do a good deed, I urge you to volunteer your time for a cause that you feel passionate about. Sometimes your workplace will organize charity events where you can donate items, money, or your time. Don’t pass these opportunities up! They’re a great way to help a good cause and your karma points.

#4) Volunteer, Donate, Support, Appreciate, and Help!

usa-751628_1280

The main idea behind all of these tips is to be courteous, kind, and give back to the community. Even the smallest good deed can help your workplace better.

What does all of this have to do with being patriotic? Sure, I didn’t mention anything about stars and stripes. However, being patriotic doesn’t just mean that you should wave your American flag around. It also means that we take advantage of the opportunities that we’re given (or that we work for!), give back to the community to help others gain opportunities, and highlight what is good about our country by example.

Time Management & Success: Case Studies in Entertainment

Heaven High and Happy Thursday everyone!

Today I want to continue with the topic of time management by focusing on three of the most productive and prolific people in literature, music, and movies. These people are extremely successful in their field and their successes not only amaze their fans but will amaze fans for generations to come.

#1) Stephen King

witching-hour-583070_1280

Stephen King is one of the most productive writers of this generation. Whenever you turn around he’s releasing a new book or one of his books is being made into a movie. Even if you’re not a fan of his work, you’ve probably heard of one of his books: Carrie, The Shining, Stand By Me, Christine, etc.

How can he keep pumping out new books? He follows a strict writing diet of 1,000 words a day, six days a week. Even if you’re not a writer, you can learn from his lesson of diligence, persistence, hard work, and dedication. Practice your craft for an hour each day. Work it into your schedule. Make time for it.

He also spends a large amount of time ingesting new books. He’s always reading. It helps him improve his craft. You can do the same – perhaps not by reading but by observing and experiencing your craft in any form you can. Are you an actor? Watch your favorite actors or movies and study them. Go to acting classes. Read about acting (and make sure to do all of those activities – especially the ones that you think might make you look silly).

#2) Beyonce

beyonce-79551_1280

Beyonce is one of the most prolific musicians in modern day music. There is even a saying that goes, “You have as many hours in your day as Beyonce” which basically means: “Do more.” Your hours are just as important as anyone else’s. You should spend them doing something that you feel passionate about – just like her. You shouldn’t spend your time looking for your phone or keys. You shouldn’t spend your time being late to meetings because you can’t find your notes.

Think about it. What makes you tick? Do you love to do yoga, paint, or sing? If you are determined and creative enough, you should be able to take advantage of your passions in one way or another: blogging about food for money, writing screenplays, or acting in various plays or performances.

If it’s not something that you have a career in at the moment, make time for it when you’re not working. Get up an hour early every morning to find or focus on your passion. It might still be hard to get out of bed in the morning, but it’ll be easier to get motivated once you roll yourself out from under those sheets.

#3) Christopher Lee

camera-660090_1280

The passing of Christopher Lee took us all by surprise. He was one of those icons that influenced countless people that spanned generations. From Dravula to Francisco Scarmanga to Saruman in Lord of the Rings. His work was appreciated by so many. One of the reasons for this is because he was so prolific. Did you know that Christopher Lee was in 280 movies?

One of the reasons is because he was a superb actor. Another may be the fact that he loved acting so much that he proved to be relatively inexpensive in comparison to other, more demanding actors. Because of this, he got to star in countless cult films!

The lesson here? Do what you love as long as you love it. Even if your career moves in a different direction, don’t give up on your dream. Christopher Lee was 93 years old when he passed but he continued to act up until then. Even now, he had a film in pre-production. He had even noted that his passion for his work kept him young. “At my age, the most important thing for me is to keep active by doing things that I truly enjoy.” Your passion will keep you young as long as you let it fill your heart with joy.

5 Time Management Skills & Lessons for Success

Heaven High and Happy Tuesday!

How has the start of your week been so far? Good, I hope. I’ve been taking on new projects and making strides toward finishing up some great products for YOU! I’m always busy. Some people ask me how I can get so much done every day. My answer? Excellent time management skills. That is one of the pillars to success. If you don’t manage your time well, everything will fall apart.

If you need a little nudge in this department, I’m here to support you. I’ve listed five time management skills and lessons that you should know in order to maximize your success in both your home and professional life.

#1) Delegate, Delegate, Delegate

We all like to be in control. It gives us a feeling of power and boosts our confidence. Unfortunately, we can’t all be in control of everything at once. Trying to control everything will lead to stress and burning out. We often shun the thought of delegation because it can seem like you are turning away from your responsibilities but that’s just not true.

When you delegate, you are showing an important managerial trait, showing trust in your team, and leaving enough breathing room for yourself so that you can do your tasks well. Would you rather do five tasks at once with only 20% of your attention on each or focus all of your efforts on one task?

#2) Schedule Your Daily Tasks

meeting-552410_1280

I say this all the time and with good reason: create a running task list each day. This will aid you in remembering what you need to do. Even just the act of writing something down aids in memory.

Prioritize your tasks so that you will be sure to complete all of your important to-do items. There are many different ways of compiling a task list and they all have to do with how well you work and what you need to do. Some people meticulously plan out their entire day. Complete with small, easy tasks during their 2PM slump. Others just create a list that they can prioritize in their heads.

#3) Remember That You Don’t Have To Say Yes

You don’t have to agree to do everything that people ask of you. Some of us (me included) feel bad when we have to say “no” but it is necessary for our sanity and stamina. We just can’t do EVERYTHING. If someone requests your assistance on something or wants you to meet their agenda, look at what you have on your docket so you can decide what is best for you.

#4) Get Up Early

Early birds get more done in the morning. Even if you’re not feeling productive at 5AM, you can at least take a leisurely start to your day or take this time to reflect on what your goals are for your workday or workweek. Some people find it relaxing to take a morning run or walk. You can even multitask by setting your mobile fitness app, walking, and reflecting all at once.

time-710380_1280

Others find the wee hours of the morning perfect for meditation. Clearing your mind in the morning will leave your mind present during the rest of the day. This is a great way to take care of your mind before it has to work hard.

Yet others find it beneficial to do a quick brain dump in the morning before they start their day. I’ve heard it referred to as “Morning Pages”. Here, you can write down all of the sad, angry, and happy stuff in a notebook. Tuck that notebook away so that you can now focus on the important things while you are at work. I keep a notebook available for “Morning Pages” so that I can clear my mind before work and I keep a notepad on my nightstand so that I can write down last minute thoughts in order to sleep easy.

#5) Power Hour!

I love a good “Power Hour”! Power hours are done with a friend or colleague. At the start of the hour, each of you should declare what you’re going to accomplish. Then, work on those goals so that you get results and reconvene in an hour to see what exactly you accomplish. Some people use some friendly competition as motivation to get more done. As long as this doesn’t hinder your work or cause frustrations between the two of you, I don’t see anything wrong with it. Competition breeds innovation and success if done correctly.

Father’s Day Weekend

Heaven High and Happy Friday!

This weekend marks an important day of the year and one that is close to my heart: Father’s Day. Parents can be the most important impact in a child’s life. Depending on how you raise your kids, you may have the next president of the United States in the next room. You might have even changed his or her diapers. That puts everything in perspective, doesn’t it?

Mothers play a wonderful and nurturing part of a child’s life. They have this fantastic connection with their children because of the fact that they carried them in their womb for nine months. That is a powerful connection! There is no doubt that a mother can be the most significant person in a child’s life.

boy-373441_1280

Fathers play an important part also and they can sometimes appear to get the short end of the stick when it comes to being a parent. Parenthood is an important partnership between two people. They have to make sure to put the needs of their child first. Sometimes it works to have a, sort of, “good cop, bad cop” partnership. However, the most effective partnership is one where they play, learn, grow, and love one another. They teach their kids (both sons and daughters) about so many things.

Fathers teach their children what honest to goodness, undying love is like. No matter what their kids put them through (and believe me, it can get rough), fathers will always love their children.

Fathers influence what their future partners will be like. Kids watch how their parents treat each other and they take mental notes. Potentially, this is how they will treat their partners when they grow up.

Fathers make some of the most impactful memories in their children’s lives. They go out and play in the mud together. They take road trips and go camping. They wake up at the crack of dawn so that they can go hunting or fishing. There are family fun nights, movie nights, game nights, big breakfasts on the weekends, hikes after school, etc. There are so many ways that fathers make memories that are always cherished by their children.

I get the privilege of being both a father and a grandfather. My family is the most important thing in my life. We love and support one another and that is one of the reasons why we are so successful in life. That support system is a significant aspect of success!

7 Ways To Boost Your Creativity for Success

Heaven High and Happy Tuesday!

This week on Facebook, we’ve been focusing on creativity. I want to continue on that trend and talk about ways that you can boost your creativity for success in business and in your personal life.

#1) Write Down Your Ideas

office-620817_1280

I have come to realize that when I’m restless in bed at night it is usually because I have too much on my mind. Because of that, I’m unable to relax or even concentrate on one thing at a time. I’ve started to keep a notepad and a pencil on my nightstand. I write down everything on my mind and it helps to calm down my subconscious – calm enough so that I can fall asleep.

This method works for creativity as well. When you’re bombarded with ideas that aren’t on topic or if you can’t give your project the concentration that it deserves, write down all of the ideas that come to mind. It doesn’t matter if you think it won’t work well, if it’s not “good”, or if you think that you’ve finally found the idea that you want to go with.

Writing down all of your ideas can help clear your mind for new ideas and will help you connect each ideas so that you can form a super-idea!

#2) Read A Lot

Reading helps expand your mind. The more that you are exposed to, the more connections your mind can make. Not only that, reading helps your comprehension, intelligence, ability to understand new ideas, and ability to concentrate.

#3) Think Outside the Box

office-581131_1280

Just because you think an idea isn’t one that you would normally choose, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t give it the attention that it deserves. Write down all of your ideas. Don’t be afraid of the different ones or the ones that are a little “too wild and crazy”. Sometimes that’s what you and your project needs in order to thrive.

#4) The Color Blue

The color blue is supposed to help open your mind and boost creativity while colors like red are supposed to help you focus on details. Utilize this by using these colors appropriately. I like having blue sticky notes around the office so that I can jot down my ideas on something that will help boost my creativity. I also like using blue dry erase markers on my big white board when I’m brainstorming new ideas for a project.

#5) Meditate

Meditation helps to calm down your frazzled and overstimulated mind. When your mind is calm, it is better able to think of new ideas. It is open and can think clearly without being muddled with old ideas. If you are having trouble thinking about your project, take a moment to yourself and find a quiet place where you can meditate for five minutes or so.

#6) Take Time To Learn A New Hobby

computer-768696_1280

Learning new things helps your brain form new connections from your old ideas to the new concepts. These new synapses will help further evolve your intelligence and your enthusiasm for your work.

#7) Exercise and Fresh Air

Whenever I get stuck on something or find that I can’t seem to solve a particular problem, I do one of two things: (1) I go do something else, or (2) I go for a walk. There’s something about fresh air that works like the “reset” button for your brain. When I get back to my desk, I can see new possibilities that I hadn’t seen before.

Happy Friday AKA Red Rose Day

Heaven High and Happy Friday!

I wanted to reach out to everyone today, on Red Rose Day.

What is Red Rose Day?

It is a day to celebrate one of the most beloved and popular flowers today. In addition to recognizing it’s beauty and delicate nature, we can also celebrate what red roses symbolize. Red roses in particular represent love, beauty, courage and respect.

rose-707552_1280

You can celebrate today by giving someone you love a single rose or a bouquet of beautiful red roses. If you don’t like the idea of cutting roses, why not plant some rose bushes around your yard or take a loved one to a garden or nursery. Nursery dates are beautiful and are great ways to spend some quality time together.

I also want to take today to talk about the importance of celebrating every single day. I don’t mean that we should look for obscure holidays and reasons to celebrate the day. Today is an important day because you are alive and following your dreams. You shouldn’t need to look very hard to find a reason to be happy every day. There is always something that you can cherish and celebrate:

  • Loved ones,
  • Passion,
  • Your art or craft,
  • A good book or a good movie,
  • The sunrise,
  • The sound of birds,

I could go on and on. Smile and be happy. After all, it’s Friday! Also, remember that Red Rose Day happens every June 12th but you don’t have to wait until June 12th to celebrate the beauty of a rose.

Concepts that Make You An Effective & Successful Leader

Heaven High and Happy Tuesday, everyone!

We all want to be leaders in our field. It is a sign of success and accomplishment. It’s also normally a pay raise – which is pretty handy.

#1) Actually Take Control of the Situation

waiting-410328_1280

Like Adm. Nimitz said during the battle of Midway, “When in command, command!” Being a successful leader means that you know when you should step up and take the helm. It also means that you should know how to take command (not just when). That means that you should make clear, precise, and direct instruction and that you should be open to suggestions and questions for clarification.

#2) The Team Comes Before Your Ego

As a leader, you must put the needs of the team in front of yourself. These people are helping you realize and create your dream. They need to be able to trust that you have their backs and their best interests in mind when you make decisions.

Not only that, it is imperative that everyone needs to pull their weight (especially you) and you can’t afford any prejudices when it comes to your employees. You must do what is best for the team despite your ego and any inadvertent favoritism.

#3) First One In The Office In The Morning

clock-577753_1280

Most successful leaders are early birds and early risers. They are the first ones in the office because they know that they can get a lot done when it is quiet and they can concentrate. As soon as people start to trickle in, that quiet time is gone. They know that they will have to answer questions, concerns, troubleshoot problems, and lead meetings.

#4) The Last One Out Of The Office At Night

Successful leaders are also always the last one out of the office at night. Great leaders must inspire by example. If you want to instill an environment that fosters dedication and persistence, you must be the best example of that type of behavior.

They know that they can’t ask their team members to do something that they’re not willing to do also. Is your team staying late to finish a project? Great! So are you.

#5) Know How to Communicate

woman-690036_1280

A lot of arguments, disagreements, frustrations, and irritations from our everyday lives come from miscommunication or bad communication in general. All successful people (no matter their field of expertise or where they come from) know how to communicate effectively. If you’re looking to be a leader, you can’t afford a silly case of miscommunication. Life isn’t necessarily like an episode of Three’s Company. A lot of miscommunications won’t come out in the wash. Instead you’ll end up with hurt feelings and possibly even a business flop.

5 Ways to Help Exercise Your Memory

Heaven High and Happy Thursday!

How are you doing on this fantastic Thursday? It is almost to the end of your workweek! Can you believe that it’s almost Friday?! I will often lose days during the middle of my workweek because I get so busy that the days seem to run together.

Unfortunately for some, they keep losing days because their memory isn’t as sharp as it used to be. Memory loss is a hot topic right now – mainly due to the rise of diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. The focus has been on how people are losing their memory. However, what if we all focus our efforts on how to keep our memories instead?

Here are five tips on how to train your brain and exercise your memory.

#1) Focus on When You Remember Things

We often focus too much on when our memory fails. Because of that, we think that we have horrible memories. Instead, focus more on when you remember things. If we’ve learned anything from the reinforcement lessons that we’ve learned from our schooling, it’s that positive reinforcement helps us more than negative reinforcement. Focus and reward your brain for remembering tasks, items, activities, etc.

#2) Stop Multitasking

In order to create a memory, we must pay close attention to something. Since we rarely give our full attention to anything these days, it’s no wonder why we can’t hold onto information anymore. Instead of dividing your attention between two or more tasks or thoughts, focus on one at a time. That is when you will generate the best work and that is when you’ll begin to hold onto more info in your brain.

#3) Make Connections to What You Know

Do you agree that new information is harder to remember than things which you’ve learned in the past? Especially as adults, it can be difficult to hold onto new info unless we make the necessary connections in our brain. We are absorbing new things every day. We are building more connections and bridging new ideas in our mind at all times.

When we learn new ideas, or if you want to remember something specifically, you should try to connect that new information to something that you already know. Want to remember that “inu” is the Japanese word for dog? Picture a dog sitting “in your” lap. Making this conscious connection will help strengthen your memory.

#4) Make the Info Larger Than Life

Our minds are wonderful and amazing things. However, sometimes we need to help it do certain tasks because it is being bombarded with so much information all the time. After all, just because you see something or because someone told you something, doesn’t mean that you will remember it. What you need to do is make that idea stick by trying to remember it with a fantastic visual. The weirder the better because that only makes it more memorable.

#5) Become Interested in What You Have to Remember

When we are kids, we are open minded about a lot of things. This helps us remember more ideas because we are more open to them. As we grow older, we begin to focus our attention more. We begin to only focus on what interests us. Uninteresting things get pushed to the backs of our minds and are less likely to be remembered. Making the conscious decision to try and make ideas more important and being more interested in these things will help you remember them.

3 Tips for Successful Video Conferencing

Heaven High and Happy Tuesday!

Today I want to talk about something close to my heart: being on camera. At one point in life, we all dream about what it would be like to be able to act or speak on camera. For some of you, the mere thought of being in front of the camera is frightening. For others, it is invigorating. No matter which side of the fence you fall on, you will eventually find yourself in front of a set of lens one of these days.

For most of you, it will start with your webcam and Skype.

Do you Skype with your family or friends?

Do you use a video conferencing software to help you stay in touch with your colleagues from afar?

Do you use your webcam to make YouTube videos?

If you answered, “YES” to any of these questions, you will benefit from these tips about how to look good in front of your webcam.

#1) LIGHTS! Camera! Action!
photographer-164673_1280

Lighting is very important when it comes to making you look good. Try not to have any light behind you to silhouette your image in front of the camera. It will also cast odd shadows. Not only that, when that backlight hits your webcam, your computer will compensate by going even darker. This will end up making you look like a faceless shadow – talk about creepy and unattractive!

Instead, have a light that faces you. This is how they make people look good on TV, after all. Play with the placement of the light and your natural posture so that you can cast the right shadows (or lack thereof) and get the right amount of light so that you can share your beautiful face with the public.

#2) What’s That in the Background???
handy-camera-365948_1280

Mind your backdrop. Make sure that there isn’t a bathroom or anything funky behind you. No one wants to see a dingy shower curtain when they’re trying to focus on what you’re saying.

Also consider what type of image you want to portray. If you want people to really focus on your words instead of the background, sit against a white wall or a solid color background. If you want to seem more studious, place yourself in front of a bookcase or two.

Make sure that you’re in the center of the webcam and that you adjust the height to your natural posture. Try not to slouch because that can make you appear weak and submissive.

Background audio is also important. Find a nice, quiet place to record. Make sure that you don’t have to fight any other noises in that room. Speak at a normal volume. Unless there is something wrong with your mic or their speakers, you shouldn’t have to strain your voice to be heard. Speaking of which…

#3) Check Your Equipment

Using an Ethernet cable instead of your Wi-Fi will ensure that you’re video isn’t going to be choppy and that you won’t constantly be 2 seconds behind in the conversation.

If you share your internet network with others, ask them not to upload or download any large files during your transmission or recording because it’ll slow down the connection. If your connection becomes slow, your viewers will find it hard to see and/or hear you and you can start to appear “laggy” (i.e. your video and/or audio will freeze and have to buffer for long periods of time).
