Bananas, Bugs, And Action

My wife Nancy went shopping a few days ago and brought back some bananas. I left them out on the kitchen table for a few days to ripen and they wound up attracting those annoying little ‘banana bugs’ that I’m sure you’ve seen. Nancy told me we should have ‘taken action’ and eaten them sooner.

That reminded me of how important it is to take action and follow through on goals in life too.

Now… I sit back and think about how…’lights….camera…ACTION!’ has been one of the primary keys to my success in acting and life. Our nation certainly never would have been born if the founding fathers waited for everything to be perfect to take action.

I mean, they were, for the most part, just ‘normal people’ of their day. They came from all walks of life. Yes, some were academics but for the most part they were the ‘butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker’ of their time.

They certainly never had any idea of being founders of a nation that would grow to span from ‘sea to shining sea’, win two world wars, send the first man to the moon, and be the shining light of democracy that America is (some would say ‘once was’).

In my success coaching I talk and teach a lot about visualizing how different characters act and then modeling that behavior so that you can get the same outcome. We’re lucky today because we have models for most of the behaviors we try to model but I wonder who the early founding fathers modeling when they were facing the challenges they faced.

They were for sure sailing in uncharted waters when they tried to stand up for their rights and to rally their fellow colonists to the revolutionary cause. I’m sure there were lots of times when they wished they could just go to work and get paid and live a normal, peaceful life.

I’m sure that many times they were more nervous than any actor has ever been on stage. But something drove them forward and the show did go on (as we say in the theater).

In their case, they knew they could lose their lives if they didn’t ‘play’ correctly this new, unwanted role that fate had thrust upon them. At least all we had to worry about when I was in theater was a bad press review or, at the worst, a flying tomato.

My theory is that the founding fathers got their inspiration from their deep belief in the providence of God and their conviction that freedom was their right from Him rather than a gift occasionally enjoyed at the pleasure of King George back in England. They were firmly convicted that ‘all men are created equal’.

I think that hasn’t changed. All men (and women) are truly created equal. In spite of the ups and downs that we all go through there’s as much opportunity around today as ever.

Why Are You Lying To Yourself?

Heaven High!

Today I wanted to talk about something that we all experience: lies.

We all hate liars. When you create a strand of untruth (whether it be a little white lie or a big one), it affects more people than you can imagine and one small strand can easily turn into a giant web of lies. However, as much as we hate people who do lie, we are all guilty of committing that same crime. Are you an honest person? Do you lie to others to get out of trouble? Or perhaps to make others think that you are someone else? We all tell little white lies every now and then – for one reason or another.

Do you know who you lie to most of all? Yourself. You lie to yourself more than you lie to anyone else.

Why would you lie to yourself? How do you lie to yourself?

We all lie to ourselves when we think that the truth is too hard to handle. It helps us comfort our minds so that we can move on or move past an event or situation. Sometimes we lie to ourselves because we are afraid of what we do not know. There are many different reasons why we would do this and we do it more often that we think.

So how do we start being honest with ourselves?

The first step to stopping any habit is to realize when you are doing it and to actively stop that action and replace it with a more positive action. When you find that you are lying to yourself about something, stop, and actively change your train of thought.

“I can’t do this.”
“I’m not pretty.”
“I am an idiot.”

Should turn into something like this:

“This is difficult. In order to accomplish this task I will have to [insert action here].”
“I find myself more attractive when I [insert example here].”
“I am smart. I know I am smart. I can continue to develop my intelligence by [insert action here].”

  • You also try some of these suggestions:
  • Being proactive by admitting that you lie to yourself.
  • Being courageous.
  • Taking action.
  • Identify your defense mechanisms.
  • Stand up for yourself.
  • Be honest with yourself.
  • Set attainable goals for yourself.
  • Notice when you’re trying to be someone that you’re not.
  • Take a risk.
  • Be accountable for your actions; even if it hurts.
  • Being honest about the people that you want in your life (i.e. not associating with people who are negative, do not share your values with them)

The most important difference in lying to yourself and telling yourself the truth is taking action. Sure, you may say that you want to read this blog and start to make changes but you are lying to yourself if you know that you will not take any steps to make that a reality. You must take action to reverse this process. Be proactive. Take that first step.

Importance Of Regular Content Uploads

Heaven High to all my Video Makers and Video Marketers…

How are you doing? Well, I hope you’re doing well. Today I’ve got a fairly simple point to make but I’m also going to let you know why it’s a lot more important than it is complicated. You’ll see what I mean as you read through.

I want to remind you of something that was mentioned in the YouTube Creator Playbook. In that document, it told us that one of the ingredients of a highly rated YouTube channel was that it had content added to it on a regular basis.

That’s still true but did you ever wonder why Google feels that way.

It’s because Google is in the information business…right? And if they see you adding new information to your channel on a regular basis they’re going to appreciate you for it.

Of course, they won’t appreciate you for long if you aren’t ethical about it…i.e. don’t optimize your videos to imply that they’re about Panama Travel destinations when really it’s about cross-country motorcycling gear. Google won’t like that.

But basically I just want you to remember that it’s important and valuable to publish content regularly. A lot of people agonize so much about the quality of their videos that they don’t do any. Remember that your videos don’t have to be super sophisticated content either.

Matter of fact Google and YouTube doesn’t even mind if import some videos produced by other people into your channel. With the huge amount of videos being uploaded to YouTube even by the minute, there’s so much information there that YouTube even is scrambling to index it all the way they’d like to have it.

If you, as a YouTube Channel owner, feel that somebody else’s video would be interesting and/or valuable for your audience, Google doesn’t mind. They assume that you’re thinking of them because they might not ever see those other videos just on their own. So….they don’t mind you using other videos in your channel.

Also remember that there’s nothing wrong with slide shows with music and/or narrative. That’s what ‘normal’ used to be, right? There’s several ways to easily make slide shows too but I’ll give you some more info about that subject in a later post.

Unique YouTube Video Creation Options

Hey Niche Superstars.

How are you all doing!? I hope you’re doing wonderful because I’m sure doing great and I’d hate to keep it all to myself.

Today I got a question for you. Have you seen the cool new video editor on YouTube?

I’m getting some emails from various people telling me some cool things they’re doing with videos on YouTube using their recently released YouTube video editor. One of the guys who’s telling me about this is my friend Art over in Manila.

Art tells me he has known about YouTube for many years but didn’t know they had such cool video editing tools. Matter of fact, Art recently made a video. What I noticed about Art’s video is that he just “does it!” He’s not camera shy at all. He just let’s it ‘all hang out’ and that’s why his videos are some much fun to watch.

That’s the way I wish all of you would be. You’ve got a lot more going on in your life that’s interesting than you probably realize and YouTube makes it so easy to share.

If you’ve got a business, there’s a lot of things about your business that people would probably find very interesting too. If you’ll just think of the kinds of questions that you answer every day you’ll get lots of great ideas for easy, short videos you can make and put on your YouTube channel like I’ve been talking lately.

What you’ll like about the new YouTube video editor is that it lets you splice and trim your videos into one uber-cool, unique video that will look very cool on your YouTube channel and/or on your blog. You can add transitions, annotations, and even music.

Once you make your videos, they’ll all be stored in your YouTube channel and you can make them private or public. It’s totally up to you.

The other thing I wanted to mention to you today is that if you go to http://www.youtube.com/create you’ll notice that YouTube lets you use some other very unique video editing services to make videos. I’m talking about such services as OneTrueMedia.com, xtranormal.com, goanimate.com, and stupeflix.com.

Each one of these services is unique in some way. In all cases they do have a premium option (i.e. it’ll cost you a little money) but you can still have some fun with the basic version without shelling out any cash for the premium version (unless you want to!).

I want to suggest you take a look at them…and at the basic YouTube video editor too. And send me a copy of one of your videos. If you put it on YouTube, just send me the link, and permission to put it on my blog and I might do it.

Well, that’s all I have for you today.

Great Idea For Business Owner’s Videos, The WHY!

Heaven High!

How are you today?

Thom here and I had a great idea today that I want to share with you. It’s something very short and sweet, simple and practical.

Here’s the deal: You all by now are pretty well convinced that it’s important to let your customers and potential customers get to know you first on a more personal basis so that they can feel good about doing business with you. Remember this, even if you forget every thing else, are you ready? Every business has a what. you tell you prospects WHAT your product or service does but they are really interested in the WHY.

We’ve already discussed that very few businesses, and probably not yours either, have the absolute only solution to a customer’s problem. Therefore you need to give your customers and potential customers a reason to prefer the WHY doing business with you, right?

Well, you know that videos are a great way to connect with your customers and here’s a super simple way to do it.
Everybody who has a business has some aspect of the business that somebody else thinks is interesting, right? Everybody’s business has the elements of some kind of story to it and why your business loves the neighborhood. Let me give you an example:

Let’s say you have a flower store. You can bet that your customers don’t have the slightest idea how you receive your merchandise, how carefully it’s packed, where those flowers actually come from, what the real botanical names of them are and many other items of information that you take for granted. Right?

So what I’d recommend doing is have somebody follow you around and take pictures and videos of you and what you do during your average day. You’ve got your choice of doing it all on one day or doing it a little bit each day over several days. But the idea is to assemble a series in pictures and or videos that you can add captions to or maybe add a musical background with captions. Videos of course have audio already with them.

The point is… what could be easier than just giving people a bit of insight into what you do and the WHY. I’ll guarantee you that you’ll find yourself coming up with something interesting to say more sooner than later. It doesn’t have to be a 20 minute speech but rather just a brief comment giving people some insight into the ‘real’ you and the ‘behind the scenes’ perspective on what you do and Why you do it.

Let’s take another example:

Let’s say perhaps you’re an accountant or you sell insurance. If you’re an account there’s a lot of things you could simply comment on…e.g. some of the books on your shelf, an interesting article you’re reading right now and how that’s going to apply to a particular client of your (without names of course!).

If you sell insurance, you could talk about an interesting industry related topic or perhaps about a few of the claims you’ve paid that made a big difference to the recipient. Or perhaps you could talk about some of the sophisticated software you use to make quotes and proposals.

You can bet that there are many things about your business that are interesting. You don’t have to give people a 4 year degree about your business and industry but just show them that you’re on top of your game and that you’re the go to guy or gal they can trust to do the right thing for them.

If you’ll make a video, or several, like that and put it on your channel the next thing to do is invite people to comment. Remember how you’ve learned recently that YouTube is looking for videos that engage their audience. Maybe you can even add some humor to it.

That’s my idea anyway. It’s super easy to do. Just be yourself, be an Actor for real, and do what you already normally do…but get it on video. Set up your YouTube Channel, put the video(s) on the channel and…that’s it. The important thing is to get started. Google wants to see information and so does the neighborhood so…give’em what they want.

Healthy Habits for Successful Businesspeople

Heaven High and Happy Tuesday, everyone!

How was your weekend? I was lucky enough to spend some time with some loved ones. I consider that [spending time with family and friends] to be a vital habit of people who are happy, healthy & successful. Success doesn’t just mean that you have a job that pays you enough to own three boats and four vacation homes.

If you have a high paying job but go home to an empty, lonely, and unfulfilling personal life, would you consider that to be a successful person? Success has a lot to do with balance between your professional and your personal life. Let’s take a look at some of the habits which will aid you in maintaining that balance.

#1) Successful People Don’t Hold Grudgeschess-316658_1280

People who are successful know what it is like to work in the real world. Sometimes you get stepped on. Sometimes you get passed up for a promotion. Sometimes you don’t see eye to eye with other people. Instead of being bitter and holding a grudge, successful people move on by focusing on their passion and how they can better themselves.

#2) Successful People Make Time for Exercise

People who are successful know how important your health is. They make sure to carve out anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour each day for exercise. They also know how important it is to eat healthy and stay hydrated. Great companies don’t run well if their CEO’s or managers make a habit out of bad habits. In order to run a successful business, you have to stay healthy and in shape.

#3) Successful People Have a Strong Support Group

A good support group is what you need when things don’t go your way or if you need a little redirection. Things don’t always go our way but we have to persevere. One of the ways for you to get past that is to have a great team by your side. Whether it’s moving past and learning from your mistakes or motivating each other to do your best, your support team should be there when you need some helpful words or advice.plan-763855_1280

#4) Successful People Know How to Handle Rejections and Failures

However, even on their own, successful people know that rejections and failures are just a part of the game. While they may sometimes need help to dust themselves on and move forward, they know how to handle most mistakes and missteps; they learn from it.

#5) Successful People Know The Power of Letting Passion Drive Them

They believe in their cause and have strong faith in what they are doing. Because of this, they don’t complain about having to do the things that need to get done. They know the importance of these tasks and (while they might consider them to be tedious or arduous) they know that complaining won’t get them anywhere. They follow their inner GPS which tells them what needs to happen in order to make that vision a reality.

Video Marketing…its all about likeability.

Heaven High and Happy Thursday!

The time is quickly coming when all businesses in America will have webpage. This technology is available now for them to build a friendly, online image that’s good for their business. The easiest tool to use to build that image is online video marketing.

In one way of looking at it, the majority of businesses already do have a website. Whether they know it or not, their website is just waiting for them over at Google Places.

It’s true, it won’t look like much if the business owner hasn’t claimed it and ‘tricked it out’ to make it attractive. But Google has already set it up.

Google’s big push lately is towards indexing information on a local businesses. That’s the thrust of Google Maps. Google already has access to everything that’s already on the web and most business people are shocked to discover out how much information it really is.

These websites are already allocated and set up for most businesses but the problem is that they aren’t much to look at if the owner hasn’t claimed them and improved them at least a little bit with some reviews, pictures and videos. But it’s still a website of sorts.

Unfortunately, you might not even know that you’re on Google Places. And it might not be the kind of information that portrays you as a likeable, local business person.

The information might be incomplete or it might not. Regardless of that, Google gives each business in America such a site…..kinda like their own version of ’40 acres and a mule’. It’s image, in it’s unimproved form, might be positive, neutral or negative.

The question for the modern business owner to answer is:

“Are you happy with the ‘default personality’ of what Google and other people chose to say about you or are you going to take control and be sure that your image is the one you like?”

By understanding how to use video marketing to increase your likeability, you can have an advantage over most, if not all, of your competitors. Yes, you could even call it ‘spin’ (call it whatever you want). It’s still wise for you to be in control of it, wouldn’t you agree?

The reason that many Google Map sites are unclaimed and that most businesses in America aren’t using video marketing is simply because most people (i.e. business owners) are at least a little camera shy. They freeze up like a deer in headlights with any mention of them being on camera. They have a bad case of camera anxiety and/or video phobia.

Business owners are often surprised to discover that sometimes being a little camera shy and unpolished and ‘rough around the edges’ is sometimes a positive when doing videos. The reason for that is consumers can be oftentimes skeptical when videos are too polished.

A little camera shyness can be a good thing as long as you can manage it. That’s because prospective customers like doing business with their more un-polished local business community. They don’t expect their local butcher, baker and candlestick maker to look or act like Hollywood movie stars.

If you have a local business that you want to do some online video marketing for….that’s a good thing. That’s the beginning of taking action. You’ll be happy to know that being a video marketing beginner can even be to your advantage.

You don’t have to be a Hollywood actor to use online video effectively but you do have to have some of their skills. And you need to learn to control at least most of your camera anxiety and focus your mind on a confident, articulate, natural online video persona. This is how you put your business ahead of your competition with online video marketing.

3 Ways To Be A Successful & Memorable Businessperson

Heaven High and Happy Tuesday!

How are you doing on this lovely summer day?

business-740076_1280Today I want to talk with you about things that you can do which will make you memorable in the eyes of others. If you are memorable, you will be able to make a bigger impact on those around you. This may mean different things depending on what you do. This could lead to landing that big client. This could mean that you get hired for your dream job. This could mean that you can get a second date or even better service at a restaurant.

There isn’t some magic trick that you can perform to make people remember you. In fact, most of this is just common sense. However, we take these concepts for granted in our everyday lives. If you remember to focus on these things, you will not only be memorable, you will be more successful as well.

#1) Know Your Values

When you introduce yourself, try to convey one of your core values during the introduction. Don’t say, “Hello! My name is Thom McFadden and I run Success for Real.” Instead, introduce yourself like this, “Hello! My name is Thom McFadden and I am the CEO of Success for Real, a company that helps people succeed in their life through emphasis on building healthy habits, communication skills, and evaluating our personalities.”

This works on a number of levels. For instance, if the person you are talking to needs your help in one of those fields, he or she will be more likely to remember you. In addition to that, this person can now correlate your face and name with a value instead of just some random business name that he or she may forget.

#2) Observe & Emulate Your Mentorsapple-758334_1280

Do you have a mentor? Not all of us do. If you don’t have one, I highly suggest that you find one soon. Mentors can help you succeed in the ways that you consider to be important. Watch how your mentor introduces his or herself. How does he or she stand? What does he or she say? Eye contact, yes or no? How does your mentor engage in conversation? This doesn’t just work for mentors either. Make sure that you are taking mental notes when you run across someone who is memorable. First impressions are important – no matter what anyone says.

#3) Amp Up Your Confidence When You Speak

Communication is important. It isn’t just about what you say though. It is also about what you don’t say and how you say the things you do say. Omitting words like “seems,” and “just” immediately helps you speak with gusto and confidence.

Don’t be embarrassed to introduce yourself either. Say Hello! Don’t be insecure about your job. If you feel passionate about what you do, don’t be scared of conveying that passion.

If you want to learn more about what you can do to be successful, grab a FREE COPY of Thom’s book, ACTING FOR REAL, by clicking on that big, beautiful, green button below.

Conquer Camera Shyness Using Audio

Heaven High and Happy Thursday!

Probably the single biggest problem that keeps people from getting comfortable with using more video is camera shyness but I recently realized there’s a way to sneak up on that problem of camera shyness and gradually overcome it. Know what it is?

It’s audio.

That’s right. Most people that I’ve ever worked with (and I’ve worked with a lot) are a lot more comfortable talking into a microphone than standing in from of a camera. Matter of fact, I got an audio file just the other day (it was a business matter) from a guy who otherwise isn’t known for his confidence in front of a camera.

As I was listening to the information on his audio it occurred to me that, “Hey….this guy sounds almost like a trained radio announcer!” So…I later told him how good I thought he sounded and he was very surprised but appreciative.

I doubt that, in his case, he’ll ever get into using video to promote his business like I’ve always encouraged him to do but he was intrigued with the idea of putting some audio (also know as ‘podcasts’) on his website. He really knows a lot about his business and actually loves to talk about it. Just…not in front of a camera icon smile.

So that’s what I want to encourage all of you to do. It’s super easy to make audio files. Decent mics are dirt cheap today and there’s a lot of different kinds of recording software that’s free too. Also…Google happens to hold audio in very high regard.

microphone-338481_1280

I know how effective audio is because I’m old enough to remember the latter years of the golden age of radio. Many of the early Hollywood stars actually had lots of radio experience. No doubt about it….the voice is very powerful. In using the spoken word, just as I teach about making effective videos, internalization and a feeling of ‘realness’ and confidence is very important.

It just so happens that it’s a lot easier to feel that way when you’re just talking to a mic instead of in front of a camera. So…I’d like to suggest that you learn something about making podcasts. They’re actually lots of fun and you don’t even have to put your pants on if you don’t feel like it.

As you may know, there are several very popular websites that are nothing but podcasts. You can actually start a program on these sites for free. It’s a great way to develop strong communication skills and confidence. The next thing after that is just adding a camera. All the popular radio talk show hosts have already done it….transitioned from pure audio into occasional video. I know you can too.
